Chelation Therapy is a process in which a substance is used to bind molecules, such as metals or minerals, and hold them tightly so that they can be removed from the body. Chelation has been scientifically proven to rid the body of excess or toxic metals. For example, a person who has lead poisoning may be given chelation therapy in order to bind and remove lead from the body before it can cause damage.
With EDTA chelation therapy, the substance that binds and removes metals and minerals is EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), a synthetic amino acid that is often delivered intravenously. EDTA was first used shortly after WWII for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning. Calcium disodium EDTA chelation removes heavy metals and minerals from the blood, such as lead, iron, copper, and calcium, and is approved by the FDA for use in treating lead poisoning and toxicity from other heavy metals. Although disodium EDTA it is not approved by the FDA to treat coronary heart disease (CHD), some physicians and alternative medicine practitioners have recommended its use in chelation as a way to treat CHD.
CaNa2 EDTA (Calcium disodium ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid) is the most common form of EDTA used in chelation therapy and the one with the history of safe and effective use. There are a couple other compounds commonly referred to as EDTA, so when it comes to chelation therapy, make sure it’s Calcium disodium EDTA.
A couple easy steps will help ensure you get the full impact of EDTA.
- EDTA is most effective when taken on an empty stomach. This is because EDTA will begin binding to the first minerals it comes in contact with, so keeping it away from minerals in your stomach during absorption will help save the EDTA molecule’s effectiveness for where you want it (the bloodstream).
- Follow recommended dosage (2 caps twice per day) and supplement with a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement. (Take separately from EDTA). A mineral-rich one-a-day will help replenish natural and healthy mineral levels that may get slightly depleted with regular EDTA use.
- Cycle on and off EDTA. We recommend 6 weeks on followed by 2 weeks off. This is for the same reason we recommend a multivitamin and mineral supplement, 2 weeks off after prolonged regular use will allow your body time to naturally resupply itself with the proper mineral levels that may become depleted by EDTA.
