FAQs: EDTA and Chelation

FAQs: EDTA and Chelation

What is EDTA?

EDTA is a synthetic amino acid and chelating agent that binds to metal ions, forming stable complexes. This binding process alters the metal’s reactivity and allows for removal. It is commonly used by health professionals in chelation therapy to target unwanted heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury in the body.

Why Calcium Disodium EDTA?

EDTA has a few different forms, each with different properties and uses. Calcium disodium EDTA is the preferred choice and has a well-documented record of safety and effectiveness. For our purposes, it is the best chelator for the following reasons:

Selective Metal Chelation

Calcium disodium EDTA primarily targets toxic heavy metals while leaving essential minerals largely intact. It is highly attracted to heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury but does not aggressively bind to vital minerals like calcium and magnesium. This makes it the preferred and safer option when excessive mineral depletion is a concern.

Common Use by Health Professionals

Calcium disodium EDTA has been widely studied and is commonly used by health professionals for binding unwanted heavy metals in the body. It is gentler than other EDTA Forms. Other forms of EDTA can deplete essential minerals more aggressively, calcium disodium EDTA provides a balanced approach that helps prevent unwanted mineral loss.

How does EDTA work as a chelating agent?

EDTA binds to metal ions, surrounding them in a stable structure. This process alters their chemical reactivity and allows for their removal.

What metals do EDTA (calcium disodium EDTA) bind to?

It can bind to a wide range of metals, but binds most aggressively with:

  • Lead (Pb)
  • Mercury (Hg)
  • Aluminum (Al)
  • Cadmium (Cd)

How should I take EDTA for maximum efficacy?

For best results, take EDTA on an empty stomach. This prevents EDTA from binding to minerals in food and ensures optimal interaction with unwanted metals.

Can I take all my EDTA capsules for the day at once, or do they need to be spread out?

Yes, you can take all your EDTA capsules at once. In fact, it tends to be easier that way because it is best to take them on an empty stomach to maximize effectiveness.

How many EDTA capsules should I take each day?

We recommend taking 1-3 capsules daily, which provides 600-1800mg of calcium disodium EDTA per day.

Does calcium disodium EDTA remove calcium from the body?

Calcium disodium EDTA does not aggressively bind to calcium, including in the bones and teeth. Unlike other forms of EDTA, it is pre-bound to calcium, making it more selective in targeting other metal ions.

Does calcium disodium EDTA pass the blood-brain barrier?

No, calcium disodium EDTA does not significantly cross the blood-brain barrier.

Can I take EDTA continuously, or should I cycle on and off?

It is recommended to cycle EDTA usage to ensure a healthy balance of essential minerals in the body. Although Arizona Natural EDTA does not aggressively bind with essential minerals, a slight depletion may still occur over time. A common cycle is 6 weeks on, followed by 2 weeks off.

Do I need to take a multi-mineral supplement while taking EDTA?

Yes, it is a good idea to take a daily multi-mineral supplement (at a different time from EDTA) to help replenish any essential minerals that may be affected by the chelation process.

What are the EDTA capsules made of?

Our EDTA capsules are made of bovine gelatin.

Are your EDTA capsules kosher?

Yes, our EDTA capsules are kosher.

Are your EDTA capsules halal?

Yes, our EDTA capsules are halal.

Is the EDTA in your capsules made in the USA and third-party tested?

Yes, our EDTA is made in the USA and undergoes third-party testing in certified U.S. laboratories to ensure purity and quality. All manufacturing is done in certified GMP facilities.
